It's expensive - and aggravating - to have to rely on a repairperson (or nag your spouse) for every little chore or broken item. With a little bit of know-how, you can fix minor problems with ease. If you do get some paint on windows, a pen eraser does the trick. The abrasive eraser takes off spots quickly and easily. It is also a lot safer to use a pen eraser than a razor blade. Use a sponge eye-shadow applicator to paint into tiny cracks and crevices in window frames and carved mouldings. You'll get a great coverage. You can still smell a newly painted room for days after you've finished. To reduce or eliminate the odour, leave a dish filled with white vinegar in the room while you paint. Keep the bristles soft and pliable by cleaning the brush thoroughly after painting. Then rub some hair conditioner into the bristles before storing it. Be sure to rinse the brush before you use it the next time. If a wooden dresser drawer keeps sticking, it's likely that moisture has expanded the wood. To correct the problem, empty out the drawer and place a safety light with a 60-watt bulb inside the open drawer for 20 minutes. The heat from the lamp will dry up the moisture. The drawer will now glide easily again. A dab of matching shoe polish can fill in minor nicks and scratches in wood. Allow to dry thoroughly before polishing the wood. Touch up scratches on dark-wood furniture by mixing instant coffee and a bit of water to form a paste to rub on the scratches. Glue small pieces of felt, cork or adhesive-backed bunion pads or corn caps to the bottom of pots, vases and other items that mar or scratch tabletops.
