Ceramic or chinaware can be classified into three basic categories- stoneware, fine china and bone china. The difference between them is the temperatures at which they are fired. Besides bone ash is added to bone china to give it a more translucent look.

Delicate and fragile though they may look, most chinaware is extremely durable. Here are some tips that will ensure a longer life for your chinaware.

  1. Do not use fine and bone chinaware for cooking.

  2. It is not advisable to microwave chinaware, especially those that have a gold or metallic rim.

  3. Chinaware should not be subjected to extremes of temperature as this might cause it to crack.

  4. When cleaning make sure you use a mild soap. Strong abrasive material should be avoided. Do not scrape.

  5. Stains can be removed from chinaware by washing with warm water after soaking for a while.

  6. To remove stubborn stains soak the article in mild bleach for sometime. Then wash with a mild soap.

  7. Before washing your chinaware place a rubber or foam sheet at the bottom of the sink. This will minimize the chances of breakage.

  8. When storing chinaware never stack cups or use hooks that are not coated. Always keep them with the rim facing downwards.

  9. Put soft tissue paper in between plates before stacking them.

  10. If there are fine cracks on your chinaware, use tooth powder to conceal them.
