A dozen ways to enjoy the bloomin' stuff Start by choosing blossoms that are still fairly tight. Full-blown blooms do not last long. Cut the stem right by counting five leaves down. Cut the stem just above it. Cut at a slant to give the stem maximum surface area. Fill a tall container such as florists use, with water, and plunge the cut roses into the can so that the water reaches the top of the stem. Let the roses soak for 24 hours, then arrange them in a vase of water. Drop a copper coin or bangle into the vase. The copper inhibits the growth of bacteria. Without an inhibitor, bacteria growth at the base of the stems can prevent adequate water intake and make the roses wilt. Don't place your arrangement under or near a draught of air. Even under a fan. An aspirin in the water is suggested by some who "know". As days go by, trim any wilting leaves, petals or flowers. Change the water every day or every other day. Collect falling petals and shade dry them for use in pot-pourri. Place your arrangement in different places everyday. Add a drop of essential oil / aroma oil to the water after the first few days.
