You just received a bunch of flowers? Unpack them immediately. Trim up to -inch off the stems and place the flowers in a clean vase with clean water. Okay, you are through with the first lesson. Read on to know more about floral design..
  • When using red and pink in an arrangement, use more pink because red is very intense.
  • When using a white container, always make sure you add some white flowers or white filler to your arrangement.
  • When choosing flowers for drying, pick the best specimens.
  • If you are using flowers from your own garden, pick them in the morning. Air-drying is the easiest way to dry fresh flowers.
  • Most flowers will air dry in three to four weeks depending upon the weather.
  • Once you dried the flowers, wrap them in a damp newspaper the night before you do the arrangement to avoid them getting too brittle.
  • To protect your dried flowers from dust, spray them with two coats of a clear acrylic spray varnish or with a lacquer hair spray.
  • Display your dried flower arrangement away from direct sunlight to avoid fading.
  • To keep your flowers fresh, cut them at an angle. The angle prevents the stem ends from lying flat and adhering to the bottom of the container, a position that would slow the stem's water uptake.
  • You can also spray your flowers with mist each day to keep them moist.
  • Avoid keeping tropical flowers in a refrigerator. They may not withstand the coolness.
  • If you are handling long stemmed flowers, use dish tape to secure wood pick on either side of the stem. This method will hold the flower and help keep it from turning or falling out when placed in an arrangement.
  • Add white liquor (vodka or gin) to water with tulips. It will keep them from stretching to the light and flopping.
  • Shorter stem flowers of all varieties (including roses!) last longer because the water doesn't have to travel as far up the stem.
To keep your floral arrangements fresh..
  • Keep the vase filled with water or use floral foam soaked with water.
  • If possible, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife.
  • Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents.
  • Also avoid placing them directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, causing flowers to dehydrate.)
