Soil preparation. This is the very basic and the most essential feature of gardening. If you want a garden, you need to prepare the soil. This is vital in order to give the plants a good life.

  • There are no hard and fast rules about soil preparations. It all depends on the kind of soil you have to deal with.
  • New gardens often have a lot of builder’s debris in them. All of it obviously needs to be dug out and cleared away. No garden can survive in such conditions.
  • A neglected garden on the other hand, may be overrun with weeds. Again, you’ll need to put in a lot of hard work to make the area more acceptable for plant growth.
  • Preparing the ground is hard work. But it’s more than worth your while if you want a garden. Your plants can do well only if things are okay at the grass root level. So, if you’re not inclined to sweat it, get a gardener to do the needful for you.

How to improve the soil

    1. Once you’ve rid the soil of the unnecessary elements, it’s time to improve the soil. This means changing the quality of the soil. Good soil would enable the roots of plants to grow easily and providing them with adequate nourishment.
    2. Dig your soil well. This plumps up the soil and lets in air. Such soil drains easily too. It also makes it easier for the roots to grow well.
    3. Manure enriches the soil with vital nutrients. Organic manure is preferable and it is always available with local horticulturists. It helps to preserve the soil.
    4. A very cheap and easy way to make organic manure is to make your own compost. Kitchen and garden waste go a long way in making compost. This will keep providing you with all the manure your garden will need.
