Do you have a built-in dust-o-meter? Sneeze once    you can wait a week to dust; Sneeze five times in a row    It's a cleaning emergency! Get the dirty job done right. Here's how:

The basics

  • Use two dustcloths at once, one in each hand. If you're dusting wood, follow the grain. Lightly mist your dustcloth and dustmop with water. The dust will stick to the cloth rather than fly into the air or simply get moved around.

  • Socks or cotton gloves make great dustcloths. Just be sure to wash them after a couple of dustings.

  • Give your dustpan a small spritz of furniture polish. When you empty the pan into the trash, the dust will slip right off.

  • Dust from the top down. The dust will fall on the floor and you can vacuum it up later.

How do I dust

Computers: Work between the keys with a soft, clean brush. (Rub the bristles on your hand to create a little static electricity    a great dust magnet). Do not spray or mist the screen with any liquid; dust with an antistatic cloth instead.

Under the refrigerator: Use a thin broom to sweep out crumbs and dust bunnies.

Cobwebs: With a rubber band, fasten a terry cloth sock to the end of a yardstick. Use it to reach up to the ceiling or behind the refrigerator.

Lampshades: Wrap a loop of wide masking tape around your hand, sticky side out. Lightly brush the outside of the shade with the tape.

Chandeliers: Turn off the fixture and use a fluffy duster to get around and through the bulbs and narrow metal parts.

Silk flowers: Aim a blow dryer set on low at the flowers and the dust will fly right off.

Window sills: Use a soft, clean makeup brush or paintbrush to reach the corners and between the sill and frame.
