So you are just out of college and already been selected on campus for a new job. You've always been mama's boy. She has attended to all your needs, bent backwards to keep your room clean though she has been the target of your cribbing about not being able to find your things once she was done with the cleaning. All on your own now, far from her, and not a clue as to how to go about setting up your apartment? Here's how you can do it and leave a stamp of good taste for your colleagues to admire, without too many hassles.

  • Start by painting the apartment. Remember to select light colours that will give the illusion of a larger living space and will also brighten it up. Maybe, you could have the ceiling a couple of shades lighter than the walls. Will make the ceiling seem higher and add to the illusion of greater space. The perfect choice for painting the rooms would be acrylic colours as the smell is not too strong. For your bachelor kitchen, make sure you use a high glossy finish as it will be easier to clean and maintain.
  • It is important to have plenty of storage space as you could simply put away things that you have no immediate use for. Use closet organizers that will simplify your work as you can easily store items in each slot. Assess your needs and buy organizers according to your requirement. Once you start storing items, you will find that there is no more clutter as there is a place allotted for everything. No clutter would mean less dust and dust mites and again emphasise clean living space. Your girlfriend will be truly impressed and that will make it much easier for you to propose to her!
  • When choosing furniture, see that you do not go in for over sized furniture, however comfortable it may be. You have to scale your furniture to the size of your apartment. Do not use boldly patterned material for the upholstery. Select furniture with legs so that the floor area can be cleaned properly. Bulky furniture will only make the room smaller than it really is. In short, buy furniture that fits.
  • If you flat is already furnished, it is up to you to make the most out of it. Rearrange the pieces aesthetically so that you are able to open up the living space. Set the furniture against the wall and not in the middle of the room. Try to do away with furniture that is occupying space without and function. If the space is really small, you have to make do with the dining table doubling up as a work desk too. Innovate, innovate, innovate.
  • Decorate the walls with posters. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. What you hang on your walls is going to reflect your personality and taste. Try to get framed prints. Or you could opt for framed photographs. Select a theme that can run through your choice of photos - for example, they could all be black and white, photos of friends or family, or all-colour ones. You could make a collage of all your travel photos too.
  • Important thing is to maintain a clear balance. You could lighten p dark corners with brightly coloured posters or photos in good but inexpensive frames. Colour coordinate them for a harmonious effect.
  • See that your layout of the pictures is effective. It should all lead up to a clean look that will reflect your taste.
  • Last but not the least, use good lighting as it is the single most effective way of completing the final picture. Natural light during the day can be complemented with subdued or bright lighting as the space demands. It could be a stunning floor lamp or a directional lamp that will allow the light to be shaded upon a wall or the ceiling and will serve to draw attention to whatever you want to highlight.
  • Beautiful drapes are now available in the market. Choose something that will allow subtle light to filter through, or if your apartment is on the darker side, use sheer curtains. Just see that your small space feels warm and inviting both in tone and atmosphere.
  • Last but not the least, be proud of your little pad. Be creative and ask for help whenever you get stuck.

We do hope these suggestions have helped to hone your own decorating skills that might have been lying dormant, just waiting for a little push to get started.
