  • Before you buy new furniture, get a visual reference of the space the item takes up. Tape together sheets of newspapers and cut them to the dimensions of the particular piece and spread it in your room.

  • Try hanging swing lamps instead of using table lamps.

  • Paint walls in a pale colour (in semi-gloss finish) rather than the flat finish. This will create an illusion of more space.

  • Make the ceiling seem higher by painting it in a lighter tone than the walls.

  • Dark panelling will make the room look cramped.

  • Create interesting angles in a room with a folding screen placed in a corner or behind a sofa.

  • Take advantage of corners, and put triangular shelves or corner cabinets that display and store collectibles.

  • Place a chest at the foot of the bed for extra blankets. Top it with some cushions for additional seating.

  • Hang a large mirror directly across from a window to reflect the light and bring in the view.

  • Decorate with space-saving neutral colours throughout the house. Use different textures and fabrics for interest.

  • If more than two doors open into a room, paint them in the wall colours so they blend with the background.

  • Create a room within a room by placing desk and chair in a corner and surrounding them with short, freestanding bookcases.

  • Look for storage opportunities everywhere. For instance, bookcases can hold more than books.

  • Make use of that little space under the staircase. May be you can keep your washing machine and other gadgets there when not in use. Or just tuck in a desk and make it your private corner.
