I am not even talking about astronauts and cosmonauts cruising through the earth's atmosphere in search of space! I am talking about finding space.... inside your home.
"I've run out of room" and "There's not enough space to store everything I need" are sentiments shared by all: incoming mail, groceries, toiletries and laundry, to name a few, all need to be stored in their own places.
Here are some ideas to manage the space that you never knew you had! Scout for underutilised space. Maybe an empty cubby near the top of a bookcase and a coat closet lacking shelves above the bar? Put a few shelves where you find this space and a considerable amount of storage area becomes available. Don't overlook the space underneath a desk, table or countertop. Have it fitted with a rolling file cart and stacking shelves and store necessary papers there. Other space-saving ideas: Install a low shelf along the wall under a table or desk. And store items underneath end tables covered by a floor-length tablecloth. When putting things away, group similar items together. When stored in different locations, it is difficult to realise if there's an excess of a particular stuff. Move infrequently used items farther away. Routinely purge unnecessary items a regular clean out every day. This prevents a backlog from accumulating. Use these criteria for ridding yourself of paper: Is it recent enough to be useful? What would happen if I pitched it and can I live with that? Get into the cycle of buying and giving away. Whenever you buy yourself a pair of shoes, one old pair can be given away. That way you can avoid accumulation.
