In July 1981, the New York Times brought forward the story of an outbreak of a rare form of cancer among gay men in New York and California. It came to be known as the "gay cancer" which later came to be identified as HIV/AIDS and became the biggest health care concern in modern history.

This FDA approved drug begins to be used in high doses to treat people infected with HIV. Lastly in the year 1993 the A ZT debate emerges where one side proclaiming AZT saves lives and the other denouncing AZT as useless.
