Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is a conglomeration of symptoms and infections. These symptoms and infections are caused by HIV or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in human. However in other species of mammals AIDS or Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome can also be caused by virus like SIV, FIV etc. Those people who are diagnosed with AIDS may get life-threatening diseases called opportunistic infections which are caused by microbes such as viruses or bacteria that usually do not make healthy people sick. However there are various controversies about Origin of HIV-AIDS.

When AIDS first surfaced in the world there were no drugs to combat the underlying immune deficiency and few treatments existed for the opportunistic diseases that resulted from AIDS. With the tremendous progress of medical science in recent year, researchers, however, have developed drugs to fight both HIV infection and its associated infections and cancers. But the discussions about origin of HIV-AID has yielded different theories. The most prevalent theory about origin of HIV-AIDS is that of the `hunter` theory . It is believed that , SIVcpz virus was transferred to Chimpanzees to humans as a result of chimps being killed and eaten or their blood getting into cuts or wounds on the hunter. Normally the hunter`s body would have fought off SIV, but on a few occasions it adapted itself within its new human host and become HIV-1.When a viral transfer between animals and humans takes place, it is known as zoonosis and it is believed the the causes of origin of HIV-AIDS can be traced to Zoonosis.

However there are more controversial theory about origin of HIV-AIDS. According to some researchers the the origins of HIV-AIDS could be traced to the testing of an oral polio vaccine called Chat which given to about a million people in the Belgian Congo, Ruanda and Urundi during the late 1950s. In order to be reproduced these live polio vaccine needed to be cultivated in living tissue, and these researchers believe that this Chat vaccine was grown in kidney cells taken from local chimps infected with SIVcmz. According to this theory of origin of HIV-AIDS this would have resulted in the contamination of the vaccine with chimp SIV, and a large number of people subsequently becoming infected with HIV-1.
