The disease that claims the maximum number of lives every year, irrespective of nation or time, is AIDS. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, as it is popularly known, is probably the deadliest disease in the history of human race. Epidemics like cholera, typhoid or plague, had claimed lives at a massive scale earlier. But these diseases were limited to a certain period of time, after which, they occurred no more. But, AIDS is such a disease which has constantly been taking lives, since the time that it was first discovered. Presently about 40 million people are living with AIDS, and till date about 26 million people have been killed by this dreaded disease. The fact that this disease has no permanent cure makes it even more threatening. Several years of researches have led to the invention of few medicines which can prolong the life of an infected individual. There are certain medicines which help a HIV infected individual to live a normal life. Among the HIV/AIDS drugs, which has been developed in the recent years, the Protease Inhibitors, are the most popular.

The Protease Inhibitors are a type of medicines used to prevent or even treat the infection caused by deadly viruses. These are used mainly to treat HIV, but viruses of diseases like, Hepatitis C, are also treated by the Protease Inhibitors. The Protease Inhibitors, or PIs, as it is commonly known helps in stopping the replication of HIV, within the human blood stream. These drugs inhibits the activities of an enzyme, HIV-1 Protease, which is used by the viruses to carry on the process of replication. For treating HIV, a Protease Inhibitor is used along with three other anti-HIV drugs, to make the treatment more effective. This guarantees the blocking of replication of HIV within human blood. The major Protease Inhibitors that are used by medical practitioners in the present time are:

Agenerase
Aptivus
Crixivan
Invirase
Lexiva
Kaletra
Prezista
Norvir
Viracept
Reyataz

These Protease Inhibitors stops the T-lymphocytes of Human blood which has been infected by the HIV, from producing any further replica of the viron. For gathering further information on HIV/AIDS Drugs browse through the site.
