The disease that claims the maximum number of lives every year, irrespective of nation or time, is AIDS. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, as it is popularly known, is probably the deadliest disease in the history of human race. Epidemics like cholera, typhoid or plague, had claimed lives at a massive scale earlier. But these diseases were limited to a certain period of time, after which, they occurred no more. But, AIDS is such a disease which has constantly been taking lives, since the time that it was first discovered. Presently about 40 million people are living with AIDS, and till date about 26 million people have been killed by this dreaded disease. The fact that this disease has no permanent cure makes it even more threatening. Several years of researches have led to the invention of few medicines which can prolong the life of an infected individual. There are certain medicines which help a HIV infected individual to live a normal life. The drugs, which has recently been invented can be divided into certain catgories, the two most important ones being the Protease Inhibitors and the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Hoffmann-La Roche, a pharmaceutical company. The medicine had been approved by the US Food and Drugs Association in 1992, for the treatment of HIV.
