Crixivan is an anti-HIV drug for the HIV-positive patients that falls under Protease Inhibitors (PIs) category of the HIV medicines. Manufactured by Merck & Company, Crixivan was approved for the treatment of HIV patients by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996.

The HIV positive patients, who have already taken such drugs earlier, can take Crixivan. It is not recommended to take Crixivan as a Protease Inhibitor for those HIV-positive adults who are beginning anti-HIV drug therapy for the first time. Crixivan prevents T-cells infected by HIV from producing new virus. In this way, the drug is being able to reduce the amount of virus in the human body.

Crixivan must be taken in combination with at least two other anti-HIV drugs. It can be taken either three times a day or twice a day. The three-times a day dose is the original dose approved by FDA where a patient has to take two 400 mg capsules every eight hours. For this dose, Crixivan has to be taken on an empty stomach and you cannot take food within two hours before and one hour after taking the medicine. The more commonly used twice-a-day dose involves taking two 400 mg capsules every 12 hours in combination with two 100 mg capsules of Norvir, another Protease Inhibitor, which increases the amount of Crixivan in the bloodstream.

Crixivan can interact with other medicines. Therefore while consulting your physician, tell about all the medicines you are taking. There are a few medicines that can`t be taken while taking Crixivan.

There might be some side effects of using Crixivan. The most common side effect caused by taking Crixivan is the formation of crystals in the urine. Crixivan can cause kidney stones, pain when urinating, and back pain. To cope with this side effect, it is recommended to drink at least 50 ounces of water daily. People who are taking Crixivan may experience rash, dry skin, patches of dark skin, hair loss, dry lips and brittle fingernails and toenails. Crixivan can also increase bilirubin levels, which may lead to jaundice. It can also be seen symptoms like headaches, pain in the arms and legs, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort while taking Crixivan.
