High blood cholesterol or hypercholesterolemia involves the excess of cholesterol in the blood. It is more of a metabolic disorder rather than a disease. However, if left unattended, this complication is likely to cause a number of acute heart problems, including cardiovascular disease. In medical terminology, high blood cholesterol has close association with hyperlipoproteinemia (excess of lipoproteins) and hyperlipidemia (excess of lipids). Indications of High Blood Cholesterol A high level of cholesterol in the blood does not result in specific syndromes unless it`s been around for a prolonged period. There are a few forms of hypercholesterolemia that lead to physical symptoms like arcus senilis, xanthoma and xanthelasma palpabrum. Persisting and elevated presence of blood cholesterol often results in atherosclerosis, which can eventually come to the surface in the forms of quite a few cardiovascular diseases:
  • Cerebrovascular accidents or Strokes
  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Angina pectoris
  • Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)
Detecting High Blood Cholesterol Before drawing any inference regarding the cause of this high blood pressure related complication, it is necessary to measure the sub-fractions of cholesterol present in the blood. Calculating the sub-fractions is a more assured and precise way of determining the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Earlier it was the Friedwald calculation which was a popular method widely used in many laboratories worldwide. But it was less accurate and used to take a lot of time and labor. With groundbreaking scientific innovations, modern testing of hypercholesterolemia has become far more less expensive and exact. Secondary Causes of High Blood Cholesterol
The subordinate causes include:
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Physical Mobility
  • Zieve`s syndrome
  • Diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Family history
  • Weight
  • Diet
  • Treatment
The treatment of high blood cholesterol is basically a therapeutic one. There are two crucial factors to take into account before undergoing a healing procedure: the prospective risk of coronary disease and lipoprotein patterns.
