Amlodipine

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker drug which is utilized as a preventive of hypertensiveness in human beings. This drug is also used in the treatment of cardiac angina. Unlike other calcium channel blockers, Amlodipine functions in a slightly different manner. The drug helps in the relaxation of the smooth muscle of the arterial wall and reduction of blood pressure. In the case of cardiac angina it helps in pumping up more blood into the heart muscle.

There are merits and demerits of Amlodipine Drugs. These are stated as follow:

Indications of Cardiac Ailments:
Hypertension
Angina Prophylaxis Precautionary measures against the use of Amlodipine:

The drug should not be administered to people suffering from Hepatic impairment, Unstable Angina, Significant aorta stenosis or pregnant women. Mothers who are breast feeding their babies also should avoid the use of this drug.

Side Effects of Amlodipine:
Drowsiness
Facial flushing
Headache
Nausea
Vomiting
Weakness or Fatigue
Stomach Ache
Swelling of legs and ankles
Irregular heartbeats
Dizziness

Dosage:

For Hypertension or Angina pain in the heart, 5 to 10 mg tablet is to be taken once in a day, everyday. Drug Metabolism and Excretion:

Amlodipine group tablets are fully metabolized into non-active metabolites. Ten percent of the main substance and 60 percent of the metabolites are excreted through urine.

Popular Amlodipine Group Tablets:

The popular Amlodipine Group of Tablets are Amlodipine, Felodipine, Isradipine, lacidipine, lercanidipine and Nifedipine.

Storage of Amlodipine:

The drugs should be kept out of the reach of the children

The drug should be kept in a small container

Amlodipine should be stored at room temperature ranges between 15 and 30 degrees centigrade.

Process of taking the drug:

Amlodipine should be taken orally.

The dosage and timings of taking the drug are given in the product literature

During the intake of Amlodipine drug, intake of grape fruit is not desirable.

Doses should be taken as per the time and intervals prescribed by the doctors

Aged patients of 65 years and above should be administered smaller doses
