Home » ACE Inhibitors
Considered one of the medicine for High blood pressure, ACE inhibitors are medications that restricts the activity of the enzyme ( Angiotensin converting enzyme -ACE) which decreases the production of Angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a powerful chemical that causes muscle contraction resulting in the narrowing of the blood vessels thus ultimately leading to high blood pressure. These are formed from Angiotensin I aided by Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Thus the reduction of Angiotensin II allows the blood vessels to expand and relax. This in turn lowers the blood pressure thus making it easier for the heart.
Facts about ACE inhibitors:
More or less Basically all the ACE inhibitors are similar. The basic difference lies in their eliminated procedures from the body and their doses. Though some ACE inhibitors are converted into an active form before affecting the body mostly, ACE inhibitors can work more on ACE that is found in tissues comparatively better than on ACE that is present in the blood vessels.
Functions of ACE inhibitors :
Along with restricting the activities of Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), ACE inhibitors also controls the total amount of body blood. Blocking the enzyme leads to overall reduction of the blood and thus the heart has to pump out less blood which makes it comparatively easier for the heart to function. ACE inhibitors also increases the potassium level thus partly offsetting the potassium loss caused by Diuretics. ACE inhibitors also helps us to live a better life. It also reduces the death risk by 20 percent. The ACE inhibitors are also beneficial for those who have had heart attacks. ACA inhibitors side effects:
The side effects of ACA inhibitors includes cough, increase in potassium levels, dizziness, headache, abnormal taste, drowsiness and weakness. However it is important to mention that these are rare occurrence considering the fact that ACA inhibitors is a comparatively well tolerated drug.
