Acidity is a common occurrence these days. So many people complain of suffering from acidity in today’s stressful lives. Some common symptoms are:
burning sensation in throat
sour taste in mouth
gas formation
Fatigue
Belching
Nausea
Vomiting
Over a period of time, chronic acidity leads to ulcers.
Our stomach has natural concentrated hydrochloric acid which helps in digestion of the foods that we eat. However, it is when this acid level rises, that the problem occurs. This happens either because of over eating or due to high acidic content of the food that we eat (oily spice foods). Lack of exercise, laid back life, sleeping immediately after eating a heavy meal, irregular meal habits and stress aggravate the issue.
Popping in antacids is an easy but temporary relief. There are some easy ways to avoid acidity or completely get rid of it. Before I give a list of foods that help, there are some changes in lifestyle habits that need to be made:
Exercise- it helps in toning your body, including your stomach muscles and therefore helps ease digestion. It also helps in relieving stress and releases feel-good hormones.
Regularise your meals—this will mean that your stomach is not empty and the acid is not lying unused. When you are hungry, your stomach releases some acid in anticipation of food. When you do not eat food at that time, the acid doesn’t know where to go. Eating meals at regular times will prevent this.
Do not skip meals.
Chew your food slowly and properly. The saliva in your mouth breaks down starch.
Avoid oily, fried and spicy foods.
Quit smoking.
Do not sleep immediately after eating a heavy meal. I would also suggest do not eat a heavy meal.
Find ways to de-stress.
Avoid eating outside. Prefer home-made food instead.
Once you start following the above changes, symptoms will automatically reduce. These are some foods that if consumed will aid as antacids naturally.
1.Water: 2-3 glasses first thing in the morning will clear a lot of acid from the stomach. Continue drinking throughout the day as in fastens digestion and dilutes acids.
2.Green tea, chamomile tea, mint tea, tulsi water—boil some mint or tulsi leaves in a glass of water, cool and sip on slowly. Gulping will not help.
3.Avoid refined foods as they are difficult to digest. Eat foods with high fibre content. Whole grains, leafy vegetables, fruits with skin.
4.Milk: temporarily provides relief to some.
5.Buttermilk, curd.
6.Tender coconut water
7.Dudhi juice
8.Fruits like papaya, watermelon, cucumber, bael.
9.Soak black raisins and some saunf (fennel seeds)
overnight. Crush in the morning and drink it.
