Caring for a pet is as much tiring as taking care of a child – one must constantly watch it, check whether it`s hungry or sleepy or even bored, potty-train it, take it out for walks, play together, get it vaccinated on time, just to name a few. It`s the owner’s responsibility to do everything possible for keeping the pet happy and healthy. A healthy pet is a happy pet. And so as to ensure its sound health and happiness, one must follow some simple steps.
First of all, the owner should take his pet to the vet for regular checkups, a routine that`s hugely overlooked by pet owners. Most people visit their vets only when the pet needs the routine vaccine or is ailing. By regularly taking the pet to vet, one can detect any health problem at an early stage which can be treated successfully without further complications. One must make it a point to take his pet to the vet every six to eight months for getting a dental exam, a heart checkup and lab analysis.
Like in humans, obesity is a matter of concern in animals as well which leads to heart diseases. Pets like dogs, horses and cats need regular exercise along with a balanced diet. Therefore, one must consult the veterinarian and chart out a regular workout time and diet plan for his pet based on its age and health conditions. Exercising regularly will make the pet more active and add quality to its life.
A pet won`t exercise if there are no incentives ergo the owner must give it treats for every time it runs around. However, one must not reward its endeavors with a piece of chocolate or other sweets as these are very harmful for animals. Fish often die because of overeating; hence, one must feed the required amount of food. Most owners don`t know the fact that fish can be fine for several days without any food; however, it doesn`t mean that the fish should be starved. Just the right amount of food everyday should be thrown into the tank.
When have smaller animals and rodents like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and others, one must take special care. Hygiene is the most important thing to consider when having these animals around the house as training them to use litter box is very hard. Some birds are afraid of the dark, so if one has caged birds, he should leave the night lamp on through the night. If a pet is lethargic or looks depressed, one must immediately take him to the vet as it may be ill.
Most accidents occur around the house when there are smaller pets. These include getting stepped on or falling of higher places like kitchen counter tops, TV surface, cupboard drawers, etc.. Pet proofing the house is important – it keeps them safe from potential danger areas. Keep any harmful object such as pesticides, medications, floor and toilet cleaning chemicals away from the reach of pets?
Keep a close watch on them when they are young as they start chewing up on anything. Keep the doors closed of the rooms that have low electric cables and switches so as to keep them away from getting an electric shock. It`s the sole responsibility of the owner to keep a check on everything and prevent any tragedy around the house.
