Replacing Bread with Brown Bread

The recent growth in the bakery products industry in India and the popularity of the ‘western breads’ as a staple food by most of the cultures has brought about a revolution.

The bread related industry is thriving in the country and the palates of the young people are now craving for delicious mayonnaise or a variety of cheese sandwiches. The market has come out with an assortment of breads - right from fruit flavored breads to breads containing various spices. It brings in droves of people of all ages as the hot, appetizing smells of baked goods waft out of bakeries that have cropped up at every street corner.

Harmful effects of white bread:
Once again the dieticians are coming out with statistics pointing out the harmful effects of eating bread. Bread is indeed fattening. It is considered as a hi-carbohydrate, energy food equivalent to potatoes or rice. Also bread is traditionally eaten with butter, jam, or cheese spreads, surmounting the amount of calories added to the diet.

White bread is also low in dietary fiber and causes slow digestion. Most white breads are made up of refined flours, which lack dietary fibers, vitamins and are responsible for creating increased sugars.
The person eating white breads in excess might suffer from the risk of diabetes. The store brought bread also uses many preservatives which remove all its nutritional values. The refined white flour is harder to digest due to lack of fibers. It is also a fact that many different chemicals are experimented with and used as rising agents in breads. Many of these rising agents were found harmful and banned later.

Salt is present in excess amount in dinner rolls or other fancy breads, making them harmful to digest. Many chemical colouring agents are added to improve colour of the bread and are harmful to digest.
Although bread forms the largest of the servings in the food pyramids’ recommended by dieticians, it is always a question of which kind of bread is considered harmful?

Brown Breads:
Breads made of whole wheat flour or a mixture of fibrous flours is brown in colour and hence called as ‘brown bread’.  It is made up of flours which are less processed than refined flour hence brown bread is considered healthy to eat. Many times seeds, nuts etc. are added to the bread and increasing vitamin, oils and fibers and making it healthier to consume. Whole wheat or multi grained brown breads are tastier, hence more popular.

As the grains in brown bread are less processed it has a higher content of dietary fibers, vitamins and iron. The fibers make the bread easier to digest.
Brown breads have an inherent taste of their own and require minimal preparations. Just adding fat free mustard makes the bread more appetizing. The bran or the fibrous cover of the grains is not removed while making the brown bread. This provides a higher percentage of fiber than the refined breads. Due to which brown bread causes less obesity.

Since the store sold white breads require to be supplemented with vitamin B artificially, it is considered less healthy than brown bread.  Brown breads are usually made from whole wheat or rye and have a solid texture, which fulfills the hunger, even by eating lesser bread than white bread.  This automatically helps the person eating bread to start losing weight.
