Periods also known as menstruation, it is a physiological change that happens to girls at a young age. One experience vaginal bleeding for 3-7 days, every month. Average age of getting the first period would be between 9-16 years of age. Females have to deal with menstruation for a major part of their life span. Scientifically, it is said to be a 28 days cycle but many surveys have proven that the time gap can be anything between 20-35 days. Getting periods every month is a sign that one’s reproductive system is functioning smoothly. Every female has a different period pattern, like some get short periods, some get long periods, some get a heavy flow while some have light periods. Not every woman has a smooth period; in fact several surveys suggest that most women go through a lot of problems, pain and premenstrual syndrome. Initial 3 days of their period span are the most difficult to deal with, all the pain and troubles start fading away as the third day ends.
One experiences pain and cramps during periods because of the contractions that take place in the womb to push the period out. Menstrual loss can also be the reason behind the pain. It is said that exercising helps to deal with the pain, some women even opt for prescribed painkillers. If the pain is so severe that it causes hindrance in the daily routine then one should consult a doctor. Some females get excessively heavy periods; heavier periods are very inconvenient and troublesome.
Sometimes one may miss their period, this would mean that either the girl has experienced heavy weight loss or the body is having some health trouble. Irregular periods is another problem that many women face, here one may get a two days period in one month , a 5 days period in another and 7 days in another. The number of days of menstrual bleeding keeps varying.
Premenstrual syndrome i.e. PMS occurs a few days before the menstruation begins. Not all women go through PMS. Mood swings, bad mood, crying spells, depression, irritability and fatigue, all of this happens when one is experiencing PMS. One can also get cramps, headaches, breast tenderness and bloating when they have PMS. Bloating is abnormal swelling in the abdominal area which may cause cramps too. PMS is a very frustrating time for women. It happens because the body undergoes some hormonal changes. It happens prior to the start of one’s periods. A girl is not really herself when she is PMSing. PMS starts fading away as the periods begin. Many women experience bloating even during menstruation; the abdominal area swells up, it feels very tight and one also gets painful cramps. Period troubles invoke a lot of anger and annoyance within a girl and it gets difficult to handle the emotions. If at all there are some severe troubles, worse than what one has been experiencing otherwise, it is advisable that one should see a doctor as soon as they can.
