Health emergencies/ stress attack:
It is quite expected that in a daily course of events, one might encounter certain emergencies, regarding one’s health. These may range from panic attacks to severe dehydration to influenza outbreaks and furthermore health emergencies. Now, the Paramedics or the Ambulance may take a few minutes to arrive at the particular location, so one must always be prepared to tackle such situations. The primary action to be taken is to be made sure that the invalid is calmed down and made to lie in a comfortable position. Secondly, one must see to it that the surrounding people do not crowd over the invalid, instead try to clear out, so that the invalid gets enough fresh air for proper respiration. Finally, one should inquire whether a Doctor is present nearby. The above conditions granted, and then one must tackle the situation as according to the nature of the invalid’s health emergency.
If the emergency is a common disorder, one may provide help. However, if the health emergency is detected to be a serious one, it is best to reassure the invalid, and simply wait for the paramedics to come by.
The following health emergencies may allow a firsthand help from a volunteer, who should be proficient in first aid and the procedures mentioned below.
Make sure the person is sitting in an upright position. Not lying down, as that may hinder respiration. One should reassure and calm the invalid, while asking his/her to breathe slowly and properly.
In case of heart attacks and seizure, it is advised that the volunteer hold the invalid upright and clutch his/her chest.
Dehydration and Nausea:
For these emergencies, first one should take care that the invalid is moved to a quiet calm place, preferably in the shade. Next and most importantly, one should ensure that he/she is supplied with a lot of water. Even better would be a glass of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). Finally, it would also help if there is a nearby fan or a cooler which calms down the invalid.
In case of epidemic outbreaks, one poses the risk of contaminating himself while attending to others. So, extra care must be taken while providing first aid to the invalid. It is advised that in these scenarios to make sure that the invalid is isolated from the general public, and is catered to by someone who is vaccinated against the outbreak.
People rescued from drowning also need to be attended to, before the paramedics rush in. The primary thing one needs to provide is CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary-Resuscitation) to the invalid i.e mouth-to mouth breathing. However, one must be sure of the proper procedure of CPR before they provide it to an invalid.
In cases of road/car accidents, where it is generally accompanied with an excess of blood loss, the main thing to do is keep the crowd away from the invalid. Finally, one should tie a tourniquet around the wound to prevent excess bleeding. In this scenario, it is best to rush the patient to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
