Avoid Stress to Avoid Getting Fat

It`s true when we are under stress, nothing soothes the mood like a chocolate fudge, a blueberry muffin or even a cheese dripping pizza. Since these comfort foods are all high in calorie and definitely add to the waistline, most women try to avoid eating them while they are depressed. But somehow, they do start to grow bigger day by day in spite of keeping calorie intakes at bay.

This usually happens due to an increase in the levels of a critical hormone called cortisol. This hormone is secreted from adrenal glands and is crucial for keeping blood pressure in check while managing the energy supply throughout the body. Since cortisol stimulates metabolism to convert fats and carbs into quick energy, blood sugar levels are well-maintained.

When one is excessively stressed out (physically and mentally), high amount of cortisol is secreted that`s why it is widely known as the stress hormone. Cortisol, in stressful times, makes the body crave for readily available energy sources which can be used right away. Not only weight gain, increased cortisol levels can effect the body in many ways:

When one is stressed, she tends to put on weight, even if she is following the same diet she has always been. This is caused by increased levels of cortisol which slows down the metabolism resulting in more fat aggregation in the body. Even trying to lose weight, when stressed out, becomes quite hard because of the slow metabolism.

Another major impact cortisol has on the body is making it crave for foods with high calorie content. Those who experience chronic stress, are more likely to be drawn towards sugary, salty and fatty foods that give an instant boost to their energy levels and lead to weight gain, but in the longer run, are harmful for overall health.

Being stressed for a longer period alters blood sugar levels consequently causing fatigue, mood swings and hyperglycemia which is a fatal stage of diabetes. Moreover, prolonged stress also instigates cardiovascular diseases resulting in hearth attacks and strokes, metabolic disorder and other health concerns.

The higher the stress level, the more fat storage around the belly. Stress directly impacts the abdominal fat which is not only aesthetically flattering, but also pose higher health risks as compared to other fat stored parts of the body.

Considering the negative effects stress has on the body, one should try to keep cool even at times when she knows she can`t take enough. The best way to get rid of stress is doing yoga as it helps unwinding oneself plus it keeps the mind calm and doesn`t allow negative thoughts to creep up.
