Good side of turning 50: Well, there are aplenty;
Bad side of turning 50: Yes, there are a few;
Ugly side of turning 50: A clear No, No and No!
Fifty is a milestone year in everyone’s life. It means many different things to many people. It can be looked at, from various angles:
In terms of health
In terms of fashion
In terms of finances
In terms of relationships etc.
But, even when one is wise enough to handle changes with respect to all the factors above, the reality of having turned 50 takes a lot of time to sink in. This could be the handiwork of a conglomeration of manufacturers of beauty products, advertisers and media, who’ve created an impression in the mind space of people that looking young is the be all and end all of life. This has given rise to a mindset that stops women from ageing gracefully. The quicker women pull themselves out of this mindset, the better it is, in terms of enjoying all the goodness that the milestone 50 brings along with it.
To begin with, here’s a look at the bad side of turning 50. It’s a stage at which a woman realizes that she wouldn’t be around for as long as she’s already been around; that she’s already through with more than half of her lifespan. And she struggles hard to cope with this fact. Added to this, the post-menopausal and other health issues start screeching for attention. Her body, which has been through lots of wear ‘n’ tear, starts showing signs of ageing. Various types of age-related disorders and dreaded cancers, heart problems etc. stare her in the eye. It takes a lot of courage to get over these issues and start taking the ‘senior’ tag in its stride.
Shifting focus to the good side of turning 50 is bound to add a lot of energy and spice into the lives of women. Science and technology have started playing such unprecedented roles in the lives of people nowadays that women need not worry much about their post-50 health issues. Medical science has wonders in its store and this is a great consolation that she can derive, whenever she’s bogged down by health-related issues. Talking about her looks and fashion, there are various solutions and consolations again, derived out of medical sciences and attitudes. Her age, in no way, should hinder her from feeling good. She has all the resources to do so.
If women have been wise enough to plan for their finances post-50, then they need not worry on that front either. In fact, post-50, working women generally find themselves much better-off than what they were, earlier on in their careers. Career stability and financial stability are two things that set in long after starting a career and they can truly enjoy these things at this stage of their lives.
The last factor, i.e. “post-50, in terms of relationships” should undoubtedly elevate the spirits of women. Seeing their children grow and settle down in their lives, new people in their lives, the wonderful bonding that the tag ‘granny’ brings along...years of experience on a stage called ‘life’. The list is endless, literally!
Moving gracefully towards ripe old age is something women should look forward to; not shy away from, post-50.
