Women are more prone to depression

Doctors notice that women tend to suffer from depression more than men. Especially when women enter their forties. And the reason behind this is that until then, they are too preoccupied with either bringing up children or with their jobs.

Why are women vulnerable?

They need to feel accepted, appreciated and loved. To fulfil this need, they work harder and take on multiple roles. As long as they get recognition for what they do and are appreciated, they are fine.

Their need for this external reinforcement is linked to the gender inequalities they face from childhood. It can be from watching the mother eat last, the brother being fussed over, someone on the road commenting on the dark complexion .. just about anything.

By age 40, her children are grown up and she starts feeling less needed. Even at work this is the time she sits back to review what she has achieved. If she falls short, she views this as a lack of recognition. All this can make her feel low. Men have more avenues of release. They can go out for a drink, smoke in the company of others or just have a night out. How many women in our society can do that?

Therefore it is essential that a woman learns to recognise symptoms of depression and gets mentally prepared to seek help. By help it could mean a change in her lifestyle by which she engages in both physical and mental activity that will keep her busy. At the same time, she should not shy away from consulting a doctor who could recommend suitable treatment.
