World disability day

What does this day mean? Is it a day to be observed once a year, and then left forgotten till another year rolls on? Or is it something we need to make a part of our lives?

There are millions of disabled people around the world. Yet few people pay attention to them    and that is more often when disability strikes within the family or friend's circle.

To all the normal people in the world    those who have been lucky enough to be born without any disability    should we not get more involved in the lives of those who are not quite so lucky as us?

We could contribute for a cause, or we could choose to get involved on more personal levels.
We could spread awareness about the various kinds of disability.

We could choose to get involved in a mission that would make our cities a friendlier place for the disabled people to live in. Are our offices conducive to accommodate disabled people to work there? How about our homes?

World Disability Day means little or nothing if it is going to be restricted to the third of December every year. Voluntary organisations and various other institutions need to be built up. Goals need to be set. And accomplished

The main thing to remember is that disabled people need to live as normal a life as possible. Not put away in cold storage    till the next World Disability Day.

They may have handicaps but that doesn't make them very different from others. They're still people with feelings and dreams. Just like you and me.
