As women near menopause, their bodies reduce and finally stop producing estrogen that is so important to a women's health. Estrogens or the female hormones helps keeping a woman fit and vital and keeps her bones in good health too. But once the body no longer produces these hormones naturally, women experience problems.
Hormone Replacement Therapy is taken by women to make up for the hormones that their ovaries no longer produce during and after menopause. Doctors typically prescribe HRT (which combines estrogen and progestin) in a pill, vaginal cream, vaginal ring insert, implant or shot. The form suggested may depend on the symptoms being experienced.
Recently, scientists have brought to a standstill a study on Hormone replacement Therapy.
The Women's Health Initiative was doing an intensive research on the preventative benefits of HRT for post-menopausal women.
They now feel it increased rather than lowered the risk of heart disease and stroke and raised the chances of breast cancer.
It was revealed that the HRT increased the risk of breast cancer by 26%, heart attacks by 29% and strokes by 41%.
Women also had double the risk of blood clots compared with those given placebos.
The advantages were that HRT has proved to reduce the rate of bowel cancer by 37%. The number of hip fractures was a third lower and total fractures were down by 24%,
But sadly, the research proves without any doubt that the risks far outweigh the benefits. The study has been abandoned.
