The nutritive and medicinal properties of the herb are many. "The fleshy root or tuber is cooked and eaten as food, while the raw tuber is a powerful stimulant and an effective poultice. The tubers are also reported to relax the bowels and provide relief in haemorrhoids". Besides, the herb is used in coastal Orissa to deworm cattle. The Centre produced capsules for the experiments by drying and powdering typhonium roots. A regimen of 500 mg capsules twice daily for a month was found to reduce swelling and bring down eosinophil and microfilariae count in the blood. But if the disease is pretty old and has led to the characteristic swelling in the legs, it is irreversible. In such cases the medicine taken regularly for six months to one year can, however, provide relief from pain.
In an effort to create awareness about the medicine, the Regional Centre has been distributing the capsules free; The Centre is also growing the herb on a large scale through tissue culture.
