Plastics-bane or boon?

To all those of you who go out to enjoy yourselves - please do not be litterbugs - particularly "Plastic Pests".

Plastics- bane or bane?

Plastics- bane or bane? No, Mi` ladies - that was not a printer`s devil - the choice is obvious - plastics cannot be considered a boon. True, there are hi-grade plastics that seem indispensable to the aeronautical and automobile industries. However, in the daily life of the average person, plastics do prove to be a bane.



Facts
  • Only 60% of plastic products manufactured in our country are recycled and put to alternative use.

  • The remaining 40% - particularly carry bags, disposable cups and plates are discarded at random and find their way into the soil causing environmental hazards.

  • Use of plastic bags for food causes health hazards to human beings.

    • Leftover food discarded in plastic bags are consumed by cattle and dogs along with the thin plastic, often causing death.

    • Plastic bags flung into open drains and sewers clog the system and cause innumerable health hazards and increase mosquito population by stagnation of dirty water.

    • Disposable syringes, drip bottles, blood and urine bags and other medical accessories when disposed off in an irresponsible manner cause serious health problems.

    • Plastic waste does not decay for several decades. Hence, it reduces the porosity of the soil, clogs it and upsets the ground water balance prevalent in nature.

    • Burning of plastics causes infertility in humans.

    Indiscriminate use and disposal of plastic products are a BANE TO HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT.

    3 things we can do
    • Avoid the use of thin plastic carry bags.
    • Avoid the use of disposable plastic cups and plates.
    • Switch over to cloth, jute, paper and glass products.
      • The choice to be environment friendly is ours so that we have a clean, green, healthy earth to bequeath to posterity.
