Disability is a broad term that refers to impairments or problems in body structures or functions, difficulty in executing a task or movement, or participation restrictions that is problem in participating in various life situations. A person can be disabled physically, mentally, emotionally, cognitive, developmental or combination of any of these. Thus, a disabled person is one who is challenged and does not live life normally. A person can be disabled since birth, or he may develop a disability during the lifetime. There are many problems being faced by disable people which normal people can`t even think of.
Types of Disabilities:
The classification of disabilities is quite wide as a person could be disabled in many ways such as physically, mentally, etc but some common types known to us are:
Physical Disability: Physical disability is basically an impairment in body parts of human beings that limit the functioning of the limbs or motor actions or affects other facets of daily living.
Mental or Emotional Disability: Mental disorder is basically unusual behavior or psychological change in an individual as an associated factor of an illness or due to other reasons. The mental changes that are not a part of normal behavior are referred to as mental or emotional disability.
Developmental Disability: Any problem associated with normal growth and development is referred to as developmental disability.
Sensory Disability: Impairment of one or more sensory organs is referred to as sensory disability. It generally refers to vision and hearing impairment but other senses might also be affected. The various types of sensory disability are hearing impairment, visual impairment, olfactory and gustatory impairment, somatosensory impairment, intellectual disability, balance disorder, etc.
The causes of disability are many; some are present since birth while others are associated with factors such as aging, accidents, etc. Anyone could develop a disability due to many reasons, and it has been believed that the cases of disability would only increase in the future due to increasing road accidents, illness, etc. A large number of disabilities are preventable if measures are taken in that direction. Many disabilities can be prevented by taking proper action such as disabilities that occur due to circumstances surrounding birth, maternal conditions, malnutrition, and the ones resulting from accidents and workplace injuries. Immunization and some other programs started by the Government has been a great effort to eradicate the possible disabilities.
Equal education and employment opportunities for disabled people is a healthy start to stop the existing disparity in the society. However, the efforts will take time to show their result, but it will surely eradicate the wrong notions present in minds of most of the population.
