Gene therapy for insulin replacement

Another research that's currently in progress is in the field of gene therapy. A chosen type of somatic cell is taken from a diabetic donor genetically engineered to produce insulin and returned to the donor. This method, if successful, promises to offer another method of insulin replacement therapy.

New drugs for Diabetics

Insulin Secretagogues

These are drugs that are capable of stimulating pancreatic cells to increase the insulin secretion. Two drugs in this group are already under use and a third one called Nateglinide is undergoing clinical trials.

Nasal Insulin

Insulin which will be effective when given as a nasal spray will soon be available in the United States of America. The product is under final clinical trials.
