Occasional snoring is a common phenomenon, but if you snore frequently you should find ways to stop it as it can affect the quality of your sleep or even life. Snoring occurs when there is an obstruction in the normal breathing phenomenon through your nose and mouth during sleep. Snoring does not affect only your lifestyle, family members are equally affected.

As snoring could make others uncomfortable, you should find ways to overcome that. Improper sleep can lead to daytime fatigue, irritability, and increased health problems, thus one should try to find out its root cause and ways to eliminate that. All those who snores do not have a common reason, everyone snores for different reasons. Other than health problems, snoring could affect your relationship as well, so take it seriously and try to find its cause and remedies.

Causes of Snoring:

Snoring results due to the narrowing of the airways, that may occur due to poor sleeping postures or some other reasons. Some common causes of snoring are:

  • Sinus and other nasal problems: If you're nasal passages is blocked due to some nasal problems, inhalation becomes difficult that results in snoring.
  • Weight issues: Obese people are more likely to snore. Those who have a poor muscle tone may also suffer  from snoring.
  • Aging: Snoring come with aging. As one grows old, the throat becomes narrower due to which a person can't breathe properly while sleeping.
  • Sleeping pattern: Sleeping postures may also result in snoring. Make sure you sleep in correct posture to avoid snoring.
  • Smoking, drinking alcohol and certain drugs are also some common causes of snoring.


Some tips that can help in overcoming snoring are:

  • Your sleeping position could make differences. Make sure that you keep your head elevated while sleeping. Put a pillow thick pillow beneath your head as it would help you in reducing snoring to a great extent. 
  • Lose some weight if you have weight issues as it would help reduce snoring to a great extent.
  • Regular exercising would also be helpful in overcoming snoring as doing exercise is the best way to tone up your muscles, including muscles in your throat.
  • Don't consume sleeping pills, alcoholic beverages, and antihistamines right before going to sleep. As all these products could cause your muscles to relax, thus limiting the air passage.
  • Dairy products that cause mucus to build up should not be eaten before going to sleep.
  • Sleeping postures play an important role in overcoming snoring. Try to sleep on your side instead on your back as it reduces snoring.
  • Following a regular sleep pattern could be the best way to stop snoring.
  • Avoid drinking caffeine products and heavy meals before going to bed. 


If the condition does not improve, consult your physician as snoring can sometimes be a warning sign of a more serious problem. It might be possible that you're suffering from sleep apnea or some other critical medical condition in which you stop breathing completely while sleeping. It is crucial to understand the cause of snoring so that it can be corrected in a right way.
