It's been good new for a while now. For over a decade now - patients have been finding it progressively easier to survive cancer. Statistics say that the number of cancer survivors has more than tripled in the recent past. The number of cancer survivors has risen to well over 25 million worldwide.

The giant advances made in the early detection and treatment of cancer is primarily responsible for this. Medical research and technology have played no mean part in arresting the progress of this killer disease.

A couple of decades ago, the word cancer certainly spelt death. But now the scenario has changed. Though it still strikes fear in people's heart - a lot of people have found that they can make a few lifestyle changes and live fairly normal lives with cancer in remission.

Happily, the age group that has benefited the most with the recent strides made in medical technology - are the children. Children with cancer now live much longer - and are able to join in most activities of their age group. The quality of their lives is pretty normal - depending on the kind of cancer and treatment they have had to go though. More than 75% of children diagnosed with cancer in the recent years have survived the crucial five-year period.

However it is of primary importance to remember that regular check ups, early detection and adequate treatment are crucial factors in dealing with cancer.
