Healthy Aging of Women

Healthy Aging of Women is as important as their male counterparts although the aging difficulties and problems in the two genders vary to a great deal. Along with physical difficulties in aging, mental difficulties are also seen. The most marked change in a woman’s body as she ages is menopause. During menopause the falling estrogen levels cause physical changes that could impact sexual function. Aging also bring emotions that interfere with sex.

During menopause, the levels of estrogen are reduced. This estrogen decrease alters the thickness and size of a woman’s reproductive organs. These changes are loss of elasticity and thinning of vaginal tissue, decrease in lubrication amount, decrease in the size of the labial, vulvar and clitoral tissues and decreases in size of cervix, uterus and ovaries. Pre orgasm anticipation decreases, less intense orgasms, reduced sexual desire and unchanged clitoris sensitivity. Emotion changes in women influences sexual desire and sexual satisfaction highly.

Healthy Aging of Women records changes in bodies and can trigger powerful emotions too.

Surgical procedures do change a woman's feel of her own body. Some examples are: Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and sometimes ovaries does not change a woman’s ability to have sex, although strong emotions about this procedure and changes in hormones can impact sexual desire. Mastectomy – breast removal - radically alters how a woman perceives her own beauty and sexual attractiveness. Many chronic health problems interfere with sex too. Conditions like arthritis make sex painful. Heart disease may make physical activity of sex difficult. Healthy Aging of Women can prove helpful in managing health conditions and also improve the quality of sexual experiences. How women think of themselves as they age greatly impacts sexual desire. In our culture, there is constant exposure to images of youth. Women seek reassurance that they are sexually attractive and beautiful. And this should be forthcoming from their loved one, who should not consider themselves as caregivers. It is always better to know the scientific facts about aging.
