As one grows old, the first signs of aging that surface are weakness which is accompanied by loss in immunity of the body and with this the body becomes prone to infections and diseases. This is one of the greatest facts about aging. The National Institute of Aging (NIA) is amongst the most popular health organizations for healthy aging. The National Institute of Aging (NIA) was founded in the year 1974 by the Research on Aging Act. The organization was mainly found with the aim to support behavioral, biomedical and social research. The organization also offers training on these researches.

The researches deal with the aging processes and study the diseases and other problems which hit the people while aging. The research is also carried on the needs and requirements of the older people. The National Institute of Aging (NIA) is one among the 27 institutes and centers which are under the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The extramural activities of the National Institute of Aging (NIA) are categorized into four types of programs. These include the Biology of Aging, Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging, Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology and Behavioral and Social Research. There is enough scope for research, training and career development in this organization. The researches both basic and clinical of the National Institute of Aging (NIA) Intramural Research Program are conducted in two places.

One is Baltimore and the other is NIH campus which is located Bethesda, Maryland. Another prime mission of the National Institute of Aging (NIA) is to expand research scopes for cardiovascular aging. The Biology of Aging Program of the organization deals with basic research cardiovascular aging in the cellular and molecular levels. The Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology Program deals with the clinically related physiological changes which are reacted to age.
