ACS

A nationwide community-based voluntary health organization, ACS or the American Cancer Society is devoted to eradicating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service. Established in the year 1913 by 15 physicians and businessmen of the New York City as the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC), ACS adopted this current name and organization in the year 1945. With headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia and branches in over 50 U.S. states including Puerto Rico, it also operates about 3400 local offices.

One of the Popular Health Organizations for Healthy Aging, the main activities and role of ACS include providing grants to researchers, running public health advertising campaigns, and organizing projects such as the Relay For Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Great American Smokeout, and Daffodil Days. Through its various programs and seminars, ACS brings out many journals and leaflets regarding some serious Healthy Aging facts and a variety of Facts About Aging to the people.

Some of the notable endorsements carried out by ACS are the Hopkins 4K for Cancer, a 4000-mile bike ride from Baltimore to San Francisco to raise money for cancer patients all over the world. The ACS spend about 20% of its budget on cancer prevention activities and 20% on patient support like transportation, patient education and support groups and so on. Research programs receive 14% of the budget and detection and treatment programs receive 16% of the total budget. 8% of its income goes to the administration while 22% of its income is spent on fundraising.
