Parkinson's Disease

There are a number of nervous disorders that have been playing havoc with the human lives. Parkinson's disease is certainly one of them. Parkinson's disease is basically a disorder related to the central nervous system that not only affects the speech of the sufferer but also spoils the patient's motor skills. Thus the persons suffering from Parkinson's disease have problems related to the movement of the muscles according to their will. The diseased person suffers from rigidity of muscles and Bradykinesia that is retardation in physical movements. Acute cases of Parkinson's disease may also lead to Akinesia, which is loss of physical movement.

The sufferer of Parkinson's disease shows both motor as well as non motor symptoms. The patient experiences tremors in the frequency of 4-7 Hz. The tremor occurs more when the particular limb is at rest. These is a significant slowness in the movement of the sufferer. Parkinson's disease may also lead to postural reflex failure that may affect in the maintenance of balance and thus the patient could fall. Gait is one of the other symptoms that a sufferer of Parkinson's disease usually shows. Usually in such case the sufferer walks using short steps.

Parkinson's disease also affects in the functioning of speech and causes swallowing disturbances. A sufferer may have Hypophonia that leads to soft and monotonous speech quality. The sufferer may have Festinating speech, drooling and Dysphagia. It has been found that almost 50 % of the patients suffering from Parkinson's disease have fatigue. They also have difficulty while rolling in bed and face problems while getting up from a seated position. The gross motor coordination of the patient also gets affected to a greater extent. The non motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease include: mood disturbances, cognitive disturbances,sensation disturbances, sleep disturbances and varied types of autonomic disturbances, like: urinary incontinence, weight loss,oily skin etc.
