Epilepsy is derived from the Greek “epilepsia” and has been generally connected spiritual experiences and evil possession. Shifting to logical domain would reveal that Epilepsy is a brain disorder which causes individuals to have recurrent seizures. The seizures are signs and symptoms due to abnormality of neuron activity in the brain. According to survey more than 50 million people around the globe have tryst with Epilepsy some time or the other in life.

Facts about Epilepsy:
The occurrence of Epilepsy is triggered , when the brain sparks off electrical impulses at a rate , four times higher than normal. This results in an electrical storm in the brain, called seizure. When this seizure occurs in repeated patterns , then it is defined as Epilepsy. Though Epilepsy can be controlled with medication for the majority patients, it is not curable.

Causes of Epilepsy:
The basic research points out to the fact that several factors may be responsible for triggering off Epilepsy. Some of them are, short illness, injuries caused to brain, abnormal brain development. In may case, the cause is unknown.

The causes of Epilepsy have often baffled physicians for many years with no proper explanatory outcome. Some of the symptoms that results from bouts of Epilepsy includes having strange sensations and emotions , abnormal behavior , having violent muscle cramps even losing total consciousness.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Epilepsy:
The advancement of technology over the years have positively focused on the chances of providing some relief to Epilepsy patients. With the use of new technologies such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) along with magnetoencephalography, the promise for a better future has become more brighter than before. So diagnosing Epilepsy has become more easier and is consistently improving.
The main aim of the recent neurological research is the development of safe and well tolerated drugs for controlling the recurrent seizure activity. Though basic research have introduced some common anticonvulsant drugs in the market, new ways are being developed and testings are on for finding new drugs for the patients. Medication is preferred and prescribed by the doctors for the patients however in few cases surgery is opted, where medication is a complete failure.
