Aging is the most difficult part of an individual's life. There is a distinct set of aging difficulties and chronic diseases which affect the elders. The chronic diseases which cause severe problems in aging are in chronological order, Arthritis, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Depression, Diabetes, Incontinence, Osteoporosis, Pressure sores, Senility (Alzheimer’s Disease), Stroke - High Blood Pressure, and Vision / Hearing Loss. These chronic diseases cause aging problems of differing intensities. The nastiest of the chronic diseases are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, depression and senility.

Cardio vascular diseases afflict some 75 per cent of senior citizens and are extremely debilitating. Hypertension is the long term silent killer. Depression afflicts a large number of senior citizens and deserves to be tackled with a lot of mental resilience.

As cardiovascular diseases have been discussed at length elsewhere we will talk about depression here. The first thing which elders must note is that being down or being down and out is not depression. We say this because a strong mental attitude is everything. While we do not say or expect you to gurgle like a pink baby, you have to agree that if you decide u don't have depression, you don't. Depression is a natural issue in Health and Common Old Age Diseases as aging is regarded as a downside in facts about aging. Depression is a mental state of being, so if you decide to tackle it with the mind...you can. We do not advocate here that you can do without medicines but if you have mild depression, you may not need them to start with and if you have moderate or strong depression, you can do with lesser medication. There are also people who get out of depression with sheer mental effort and you can be one of them.

You have to tell yourself that you had decided to be depressed so you were depressed. And now you have decided not to be depressed. Even though your depression may be a medical phenomenon or not, you or some one else except your doctor, cannot be sure. And that you will do the utmost thinking in mentally agile terms, and do deeds that lessen its severity. It will be an uphill climb...but then climbing is all about going uphill is it not? You are not expected here to dispense with medical advice or medicine though we say you can, if you decide, to do without them. We do not think depression is a chronic disease.
