Health and Common Old Age Diseases

When we consider the subject of Health and Common Old Age Diseases, cardiovascular diseases dominate so much so that this entire discussion on aging and disease related aging difficulties would be confined to Cardiovascular Disease in Old People. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of Cardiovascular Disease mortality and morbidity today. Coronary heart disease accounts for some 75 per cent of deaths in men and women in adults more than 60 years of age. Also CHF - Congestive Heart Failure (), is the most common cause of hospitalization in the elderly. The term heart failure means the heart has not been pumping as effectively as it should to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body's cells. CHF- Congestive Heart Failure occurs when the heart's weak pumping action results in a buildup of congestive fluid in the lungs and body tissues. CHF usually develops slowly.

Symptoms tend to worsen gradually over time. The slow onset and progression of CHF, in this vicious cycle of Health and Common Old Age Diseases, results from the hearts’ own efforts to deal with its gradual weakening. The heart compensates by enlarging and by forcing itself to pump faster to circulate more blood.

The risk factors related to these aging problems and problems in aging are heart attacks, Coronary artery disease, Hypertension, Arrhythmia, Heart valve disease of the aortic and mitral valves especially Cardiomyopathy, Congenital heart defects and Alcohol and drug abuse. In left side heart failure, which is a part of the Common Old Age Diseases discussed above, patients experience breath shortness, fatigue, and continuous coughing. In right-sided heart failure, the slow blood flow results in fluid buildup in veins. The feet, legs, and ankles tend to swell with increased fluid volume. This swelling is called edema. Edema may also spread to the lungs, liver, and the gastrointestinal tract. Fluid buildup causes patients to urinate more frequently and fluid buildup also taxes the kidneys' ability to dispose of sodium and water, which may lead to kidney failure. Health and Common Old Age Diseases are the two sides of a coin called facts about aging.
