There are several facts about aging which sound quite bitter and sad. In the old age people become quite weak physically and become quite dependent on the others for support. But there are not only these negative things that surround aging. Aging can be talked in a more positive way. It is the natural maturing of body. The old people have a big place in our hearts as they happen to be the most respectable members of our society. There are several days in honor of elderly citizens which are celebrated solely for the aged members of our society. One such day is the Grandparents day.

The National Grandparents Day is a secular holiday in the United States. The Grandparents Day celebrations are done on the Sunday which follows just after the Labor Day. There is also an official song for this great day. It is the famous song “A Song For Grandma And Grandpa” by Johnny Prill. The official flower of this day is forget-me-not.

The Grandparents Day came to be known because of Marian McQuade. She was the one who campaigned for establishing an official holiday to honor all the grandparents of US. Her efforts become fruitful in the year 1973. Arch Moore-the then Governor made the official declaration of the first ever Grandparents Day.

This took place in West Virginia. Later Senator Jennings Randolph made the resolution to give Grandparents Day, the status of a national holiday, in the United States Senate. In 1978 the Congress passed a legislation which proclaimed that the first Sunday which followed just after Labor Day would be celebrated as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by Jimmy Carter-the then president. This day was officially acquired by Canada in the year 1995. This day is marked with great celebrations when the younger generation organize shows, sing, plan get togethers, and give gifts to the elderly citizens.
