Headaches, a bane of our modern lives, is one of the most common and most ignored ailments. While the niggling pain in your head continues to give you company through the day, an aspirin will rectifies the situation and gives you respite for few hours. But the headache comes back again, especially after that argument with the boss. Headaches are not necessarily a cause of concern for most people. But it is usually the signal of the body of the presence of some tension, especially in the muscles of neck and shoulder. More than ninety per cent of people all over the world have headaches, with women having higher chance than men. While in rare cases, headache is accompanied by or is a symptom of a more serious disorder, it commonly occurs for no known reason. In such cases, headaches become the primary illness. It is important to know well the different symptoms of headaches, as this is important to distinguish between the different forms of headache, while it enables the doctor to reach the right diagnosis and treatment.

The symptoms of headaches varies with respect to the type of headache, namely, tension headaches, migraine headaches and cluster headaches. These symptoms help to distinguish among the various symptoms, based on the location of pain, the severity, the level of occurrence and patterns, if any, the nature of cyclical patterns, if any, the duration of the headache and the nature of the pain itself. These determine the essential characteristics of the headache, thus also offering the right treatment for the same. One of the common symptoms of headaches include a niggling pain in either around the head, while in some other headaches, it begins from the shoulders and the neck and then proceeds onto the head. Depending on the type of the headache, this pain could be either mild, moderate or severe, could be sharp or shooting or could be a gentle or severe throbbing. Usually the location of the pain is also a criteria for determining the type of headache. For instance, while tension headache is known as bilateral headache, migraine attacks usually hit only one side of the head. Cluster headaches are known for affecting one side and that side of the face.

Besides these, there are other symptoms of headaches as well, such as vomiting, nausea, irritability, confusion and sensitivity to light and sound, among others. At the same time, these symptoms are not visible in the case of tension headaches. But severe forms of headache usually generate much irritability in persons, thus making it difficult to concentrate on any work. Some of the migraine headaches are accompanied by the presence of auras, that is dazzling visions of light and blind spots right before the headache is about to begin. Some forms of cluster headaches are known to attack while a person is in deep sleep, thus forcing him to arise from sleep. It is this variety in the nature of headaches that makes it imperative for you to know well the symptoms of headaches. At the same time it determines the required relief and care that the headache calls for.
