Below is a typical list of warning signs exhibited by teens at risk for suicide. But this is only a first step. You need to add your own observations and opinions about what spells danger for your kids.
- A change in friends or the amount of time spent with friends.
- Sudden change in behaviour
- Dramatic change in appetite.
- Sleeping difficulties or sleeping too much.
- Problems at school.
- Inability to concentrate or sit still
- Confused thought processes; inability to `think straight`.
- Unexplained loss of energy or wild variations in energy levels.
- Increased alcohol or other drug use.
- Constant feeling of worthlessness or self-hatred, which may be covered up.
- Excessive risk-taking such as driving recklessly, alcohol use, sex without contraception.
- Misuse of sex and physical relationships.
- Preoccupation with death, dying or suicide.
- Giving away personal or prized possessions.
- Family history of depression and suicide - the most telling signs.
