Below is a typical list of warning signs exhibited by teens at risk for suicide. But this is only a first step. You need to add your own observations and opinions about what spells danger for your kids.

• A change in friends or the amount of time spent with friends.
• Sudden change in behaviour
• Dramatic change in appetite.
• Sleeping difficulties or sleeping too much.
• Problems at school.
• Inability to concentrate or sit still
• Confused thought processes; inability to `think straight'.
• Unexplained loss of energy or wild variations in energy levels.
• Increased alcohol or other drug use.
• Constant feeling of worthlessness or self-hatred, which may be covered up.
• Excessive risk-taking such as driving recklessly, alcohol use, sex without contraception.
• Misuse of sex and physical relationships.
• Preoccupation with death, dying or suicide.
• Giving away personal or prized possessions.
• Family history of depression and suicide - the most telling signs.
