Don't worry if you are not able to get along occasionally with a brother or a sister. Sibling rivalry is as ancient as human history. The first born often feel that they are saddled with too much responsibility; the rest of the children seem to be having all the fun!
The younger ones think that the older one is the lucky one and gets to do all that he/she wants to. This is the feeling that exists in many families even today, so it is perfectly natural. Brothers and sisters compete but as long as it is healthy competition, there is no need to worry. However, if there is too much argument and too much fighting, then it warrants attention because it means that jealousy is becoming larger than life. Take control of yourself so that your parents don't have to step in too often.
Sit by yourself and answer these questions:
- Are you angry with the person or the situation?
- Is your sister always first in class? Are you unable to perform equally well? What talents do you have? How are you exploiting them?
- Aren't you happy with your sister's success? Isn't it better that your sister is successful and not someone else's sister?
- Congratulate your brother or sister on their achievement and share in their happiness, instead of sulking. Automatically, your brother or sister will participate in your happiness!
- Don't compete about who is going to take the right step in this direction. Remember, your friends may leave you and go away and you may perhaps never see them again. But your family is going to be with you forever. Investing in the relationship now is important!
- If in case things still don't work out, don't despair. Sit together with your sibling and discuss (without emotions) your negative feelings. You will be surprised at the kind of negative feelings you have aroused in your sibling!
