What happens to a girl who is single on Valentine’s Day? How does she cope with the situation? Does she get jealous of the cards or gifts that her friends get and lock herself up in her room because there is no one that she can call her own? Many young girls say that is exactly what they do; they are ashamed that they have no boyfriend or admirer to offer them those symbols of love. Here are a few things you could do to show the world that what you care about is the celebration of love.

  • Honour the day of love to acknowledge people whom you love and who love you.
  • Send cards to people whom you love, both young and old. This will help make you feel you are special and at the same time enrich the lives of others. Will you be my Valentine?
  • You could have a Valentine’s dinner or lunch with people who matter; people who have made your life so much easier and better, like even a sister or a brother.
  • Why hope against hope that someone will send you flowers? Why not choose those flowers and send it to yourself? There is so much pleasure to be gotten from looking at them. After all, Valentine’s Day is about loving yourself too.
  • Don’t spend time listening to love songs about a break-up with a boyfriend or being alone! Listen to more lively songs.
  • Don’t hide and don’t pretend the day doesn’t exist when the whole wide world is celebrating.
  • If you do feel that you should pity yourself because you have no one, do so for an hour or two. But don’t spend the day drowning yourself in alcohol, drugs or even food. This is not the day to abuse yourself.
  • Give a gift to your parents, and your brother/sister. It needn’t be too fancy. Get your brother a ticket to the cricket or tennis match; you could sponsor your mother for the local spa.
  • If you are a father, don’t gift something to just your wife and daughter – include the son too; you love him, don’t you?
  • As a wife and a mother, give your husband something too (we do ask for equal rights as far as other things are concerned, don’t we?) and give gifts to your children. After all, we are saying that we love them.
  • Remember to write out a personal thank you card to all those who have thought about you on this special day.
On other days we love people without acknowledging it openly.  On Valentine’s Day we just display it more. So go ahead! What are you waiting for?
