Sweet poison A lot of people have switched to sugar substitutes, instead of sugar. More and more young people are reaching out for these sugar substitutes, in their effort at looking slim and svelte, and invariably on weight-loss diets. Sugar substitutes make foods taste sweet, but have no calories. Did you know there is a cloud of controversy looming large, over the efficacy of these sugar substitutes? Are you aware of the side-effects?

The first sugar substitute was derived from Saccharin, discovered in 1879. There have been market and laboratory researches, public outcries, media coverage etc, but sugar substitutes reappear under different brand names time and again. What is worrisome is the fact that more young people are resorting to â€"Diet” soft drinks and using sugar substitutes in their tea / coffee as well.

Symptoms

Prolonged and regular use of sugar substitutes can produce certain worrying symptoms. They may include any of the following:

  • stomach spasms/ cramps
  • memory loss
  • nervous disorders
  • numbness in lower limbs
  • vision / hearing loss/ impairment
  • joint pains
  • dizziness /vertigo
  • unexplained headaches
  • depression / anxiety attacks
  • slurred speech

The above symptoms have been noticed amongst people who have constantly been using sugar substitutes as well as consuming â€"diet” soft drinks. Invariably these symptoms have stumped the doctors and led to the wrong diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis and Systemic Lupus, in several cases.

Aspartame

When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in Aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. The toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. Prolonged use of these â€"diet” drinks can even become life-threatening. It is known to pass the blood-brain barrier, deteriorating the neurons in the brain. This can sometimes also lead to altered behaviour patterns.

What can YOU do?

All the symptoms are reversible, by just discontinuing the use of these sugar free products.

  • Avoid drinking â€"diet” drinks
  • Read the label
  • Spread the word
  • You are better off exercising, than relying on â€"diet” products to help you shed the kilos!
  • Do you really want to succumb to this â€"sweet poison?” The decision is yours.
