The cat race

CAT stands for Common Admission Test for determining the best minds and their admission to the renowned Indian Institutes of Management, and other business schools. Are you ready to join the â€"CAT” race?

The Question Paper

The question paper offers four / five options for each question. Each of the three sections has about 25 questions which aim to test the following abilities:

  • Verbal ability
  • Quantitative aptitude
  • Data interpretation
  • Logical reasoning
  • Reading & Comprehension techniques

In order to succeed…

  • You will require rigorous an regular preparation to make it in this exam.
  • Remember the question papers do not follow any predictable style. So expect the unexpected
  • You will need to prove your proficiency at a certain level in all the sections
  • There are cut-off marks for each section
  • There is negative marking for wrong answers- so no guesswork please!
  • You will find questions based on school level mathematics, including algebra, arithmetic, geometry and trigonometry. Your foundation in Maths should be good.
  • Practice makes perfect! So join appropriate classes / tuition centers and practice till you are perfect.

Watch out for…

  • 6 or more, long passages will be given to assess your reading and comprehension abilities. Objective questions based on these will need to be answered within a specified time frame.
  • In 2006 four marks were given for the correct response, and 1 mark was minussed for wrong responses
  • Data interpretation is important. Data may be presented in the form of descriptions, graphs, pie charts, diagrams etc. This tests your analytical skills
  • It is important that you develop a capacity for fast reading, comprehension and response
  • Read the passage first and then try to answer the questions. You may end up wasting a lot of time if you work the other way round!
  • Use your wisdom in choosing the questions you are sure you can do justice to.

CAT is a simple way of assessing the following qualities, every Manager should possess:

  • Problem-solving ability
  • Good communication skills
  • Managerial aptitude
  • Quick thinking
  • Precision

The percentile scores worked out for the CAT, shows that the test attempts to compare the relative competence of the candidates. It does not attempt to judge the skills / knowledge of the individual. So, if you are planning to join the â€"CAT” race, make sure you’ve put in the required hard work!
