Young Indian women with an interest in computers and related technologies have an interesting career option in computer networking. Those who wish to take up networking as a career can either take it up after a full-fledged degree in either Computer Science or related subjects or take up specialized short-term
courses in networking. These courses also offer chances to candidates from non-IT background to take up this lucrative career option.
Even within networking, there are several specializations like network engineer, network administrator, or network security expert.
- Network engineers focus mainly on system upgrades, security testing, evaluating vendor products and such others.
- Network administrators configure and manage LANs and WANs. They have the responsibility to install, maintain, operate and troubleshoot telecommunication and computer networks of various types.
- Network security experts have the responsibility to protect networks from illegal hacks, virus attacks and unauthorized access. They also have to design, develop, install and test software in addition to trouble shooting.
Certifications from Microsoft, Novell and Cisco are prized and most in demand. Recertification exams at periodic intervals help to keep in touch with latest technologies and reduce chances of being redundant when technological updates happen. A skill worth cultivating is the ability to explain technical terms in easy language.
The field involves some basic technologies on which most networking courses are built. A deep study of these technologies like IP and TCP/IP, Ethernet can help candidates interested in the field of computer networking.
Choosing certifications to pursue depends on area of interest. Microsoft certification deals with administration of networking operating systems, while Cisco deals with networking devises like hubs, switches, and routers, says Samantha, who is planning to take up networking as her career after completing her MCA.
It is desirable to acquire certifications from institutes having good infrastructure and experienced faculty, she says. Some professionals take the trouble to acquire multiple certifications to gain a red carpet welcome into the job arena.
