The Color of Friendship is a tale of a girl called Mahree Bok who inhabits a farm with her parents and brother called Rian. A black girl who lives with them and works in their house. The father of Mahree Bok is a policeman. Piper Dellums inhabits in a place in Washington, D.C.. The father of this girl is a US congressman. A time comes when Mahree has to stay with the Dellum family for some reason. Mahree does not know that the Dellums are black while the Dellums do not know that Mahree is white. A misunderstanding takes place . Mahree remains in the room of Piper during this time. It is during this period that they come to know one another , and a relationship of love grows. She views how the black and white people in America mix up with each other.

After the killing of BiKo by the police of South Africa, protests were launched in the embassies of South Africa scattered around the World. Officers of embassy of South Africa in Washington DC comes to take Mahree Bok away when the Dellums are not at home. Later Dellum comes to take Mahree back. During this time, Mahree feels sympathy for the the blacks living in South Africa. She shows this bringing a flag symbolizing freedom stitched to inner part of the coat she wears.
