The first thing you should do is sit down and make a list of all the great dishes that you and your family have shared over the years. What are the ones that you prepare regularly year after year? Complete a list of at least five recipes in several categories. You can look at the table of contents of a recipe book and form your list from that.
Some ideas are: Main Dishes, Deserts, Salads, Dips, Drinks, Cookies, Vegetable dishes and any other dishes that have survived through the years.
After you've made your lists it is time to get the recipes together. Once you've done that now the real fun begins.
Making the book
- Create a cover that is personal and give your recipe book a title.
- Next you need to put the recipes in your book, this will take a bit of time and a format that is easy to work with.
- You can use a border and some photos of past get-togethers that you can use to personalize your page. Do this for each page, check spelling and make sure you have all the recipes in their correct categories.
- You may want to add a couple of pages of memories from past holidays, photos or stories.
- You can use Desktop publishing programs, or you can write and draw neatly. You can type on Word and printout too! Use any method that works for you.
- After the printed matter or written matter is ready, laminate the booklet since most inks are not water proof and you wouldn't want your creation to get ruined by a spill in the kitchen!
- Then, get it bound. Spiral binding is good enough, but do what you can afford to. Keep it simple.
- To make the gift extra special you can include a small gift basket with some ingredients from an extra special recipe, for example fudge or cake. Arrange this nicely in the basket or other container of your choice and present the gift.
TIP: Home-made gifts are special and when you take the time to make put this together your hard work will pay off when you see the smiles it brings.
